Currently child obesity is considered a worldwide epidemic by the WHO. The situation of children's health in Spain is mainly due to the problem of overweight and obesity that affects 34% of children between 5 and 19 years of age, despite the efforts that have been made so far by educators and primary care professionals to prevent this rate from growing. Spain ranks fourth in Europe in terms of obesity and overweight in children between 5 and 10 years of age and second in girls in the same age group. Likewise, 14.2% of the child population suffers from this problem measured by the Body Mass Index (BMI) and 24.5% has abdominal obesity. What is more worrying is that despite the efforts made, the prevalence of child obesity has grown in the last two decades: 1.6% according to BMI and 8.3% according to abdominal obesity.
