Abstract

The benefits of breastfeeding are very well known. However, the prevalence and duration of breastfeeding in Europe does not meet the recommendations of major health organizations. The role of health professionals in initiating and sustaining breastfeeding is critical. In order to be able to support and promote breastfeeding adequately, it is necessary to have appropriate and up-to-date knowledge. The present article sets out the main concepts and recommendations for effective breastfeeding.
